Therapeutic services for children, teens, and caregivers

About Katrina Welsh, Ph.D.
(she/her/hers)
Welcome!
I'm glad you've found your way to my website. If you are considering getting support for you or your child, I hope that I might be helpful to you.
Everyone’s journey is unique, and if I get to be a part of that journey with you or your family, I look forward to it. My goal when working with clients is to build a connection that makes them feel safe and supported. I hope to help clients figure out what could make life feel easier and how to get through the hard times. Therapy can look different for different people - I strive to collaborate with clients as well as use my knowledge and experience to discover what might be the right fit for them.
I am an LGBTQIA+ affirming and neurodivergent-affirming therapist. I aspire to be an affirming therapist in general, but I want to address those two populations specifically, because I hope they can feel comfortable reaching out to me when considering services.
I primarily enjoy beginning my work with children who are between the ages of 7-12 years. I previously worked with much younger children as well, but because I only offer telehealth services, I have found that starting around age 7 or older works best for my approaches. I currently see many teens, but they are clients who I have known since they were younger. I also work with caregivers about parenting-related topics and support them to engage in reflective parenting.
One of my favorite things about working in private practice in Iowa City since 2013 (when I began to work at the Anderson, Arnold, and Partners group practice) is getting the chance to have long-term and on-going therapeutic relationships with children and families. Sometimes clients pop back up years after we finished our work together because something new has come up. If you are one of those past clients - Hi! Feel free to reach out, and if I'm no longer the right therapist for you, I'd be happy to try to assist you in finding someone who can support you. I began Katrina Welsh Psychology Services in 2026, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Iowa City-area community as well as others in Iowa who would like to receive telehealth services from me.
In the past, I have conducted Developmental and/or Psychological Assessments/Evaluations. Although I do not currently provide assessment services, I can discuss evaluation reports that clients have obtained from other providers and/or help current clients pursue that with another professional, if it makes sense to do so.
If you're interested in my services, please call the number below and leave a message. I work part-time, so I usually attempt to return new client calls about once per week.
I do not provide emergency or crisis services. If you are having an emergency, please dial 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
If you are not in immediate danger but need crisis support, please call or text the Suicide and Crisis Life Line by dialing 988 on your phone.
Another resource for those in Johnson or Iowa Counties (in Iowa):
If you need crisis support, you can call CommUnity at 1-855-581-8111 and ask to have Mobile Crisis Response dispatched. The Mobile Crisis Response service dispatches mental health counselors to places where a mental health crisis is occurring; it is completely free, voluntary, and confidential. See https://builtbycommunity.org/i-need-help/mobile-crisis/ for more information.
